An intensive two-part online workshop aimed at NHS Western Isles staff who frequently have conversations about deteriorating health including Advanced Nurse Practitioners, other senior nurses, doctors, health care assistants and other AHPs.

This workshop is for NHS Western staff only

Workshop Overview

This interactive course consists of a series of two linked webinars run over 2 weeks, which will cover different topics. At each session, participants will watch a real time interactive demonstration led by EC4H tutors and will have the opportunity throughout the demonstration to contribute suggestions and feedback to the tutor team via the chat box.

Session 1: Discussing Future Care Planning – 30th January (2 pm to 3.30 pm)
Session 2: Discussing Deteriorating Health & DNACPR – 6th February (2 pm to 3.30 pm)

Participants must attend both sessions.

Learning Outcomes

This advanced communication workshop offers participants the opportunity to:
• Review their current practice in relation to communication in clinical practice, and with colleagues and other health and care staff.
• Identify personal learning objectives and develop strategies for addressing these within a peer learning group.
• Consider and take account of patient/carer/colleague perspectives.
• Identify and practise ways of increasing communication effectiveness.
• Exchange ideas and experiences with colleagues from other specialties

Gail Allan

EC4H Lead Tutor

Gail is the Lead Nurse, Specialist Nursing in NHS Western Isles. She completed her EC4H tutor training in October 2021. Her interests are in Anticipatory Care Planning and promoting realistic conversations. NMC: 82H0689S

Donna Young

EC4H Tutor

Donna is a cancer and palliative clinical nurse specialist in the Western isles. She has been involved in promoting the importance of effective communication in advanced care planning and also the education of student nurses. More recently she completed her tutor training with EC4H in March 2022.

Joan MacKay

EC4H Tutor

Joan currently works as an Advanced Care Practitioner in Resuscitation and Clinical Risk within NHS Western Isles. She has been an adult trained nurse for 21yrs, more recently working in resuscitation. Joan has been an EC4H instructor since September 2021.

Karen McKenzie

EC4H Tutor

Karen Mackenzie is the Alzheimer Scotland Dementia Consultant for NHS Western Isles. Karen qualified as a Speech and Language Therapist in 2006, specialising in working with adults with acquired neurological conditions and dementia, whilst developing clinical leadership and quality improvement capability in a number of NHS Scotland Boards. She is a Scottish Improvement Leader (ScIL) graduate and, in February 2023, qualified as a EC4H tutor.
